The Chrysler Aspen is a full-sized SUV designed for heavy towing capacities. It has a body-on-frame design which makes it more like a truck-base SUV than a crossover, and provides good off-roading capabilities. This also provides for a heavier vehicle that lends itself to a rough and tumble ride which requires a more powerful engine with lower fuel consumption. However, its spacious interior provides plenty of room for the family and the extra towing capacity is beneficial for long family trips.
The Chrysler Aspen is comes in two trim levels: the Limited and the Limited HEV. The latter is the hybrid version of this vehicle. Production of the iconic Japanese sports coupe, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, has officially ended. Built at its former home in Normal, Illinois, the last Eclipse precedes a 22 year history that has reached cult status. Even after nearly one million units were sold, Mitusbishi still followed through with its plan to consolidate its vehicle line up to enter a new era and new brand image. That image, apparently, did not have room for one of their most memorable cars.
To give the last Eclipse a proper send off, Mitusbishi gave the specially equipped model to Mecum Auctions so it could be bid on. The 2012 Kalapana Black was “put together” by Eclipse fans on Mitsubishi’s Facebook page. The only fourth generation model to be equipped with both the commemorative SE package and the 265 horsepower 3.8 liter V6, the last Eclipse features unique, gun-metal 18 inch wheels and special graphics.
Fully loaded with a Rockford Fosgate stereo, rear view camera, sunroof and HID headlamps, the Mitsubishi will be auctioned off at the St. Charles Illinois Auction. Bidding will begin September 17 with no reservation and a $15 entry fee. Land Rover has announced a series of updates for the 2012 Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport.
First and foremost, the 3.0-liter SDV6 diesel engine has been tuned to produce 256 PS (188 kW / 252 hp) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque - an increase of 11 PS (8 kW / 11 hp). It is connected to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a Jaguar-inspired rotary gear-selector, which enables both models to have reduced CO2 emissions of 230 g/km.
Besides the added performance, the SUVs feature restyled wheels, an optional 17-speaker 825W Harmon Kardon audio system and updated infotainment systems with "Say What You See" voice control. Subaru obliterates Isle of Man lap record with stock WRX STI. We talk about the Nürburgring a lot, but perhaps it's time we start devoting more ink to the Isle of Man. Located between Great Britain and Ireland, the tiny bit of green plays host to one of the most impressive displays of speed on the planet.
The annual Isle of Man TT plays out on a 37.8-mile course made up of public roads, which are closed down during race days. It's run by motorcyclists, and crazy sonsofbitches skilled pilots can complete the loop in under 18 minutes. Curious how long it would take an automobile to run the same course? Back in 1990, driver Tony Pond was curious as well, and he pushed a Rover 827 Vitesse around the island in 21 minutes, becoming the first driver to average 100 miles per hour in a car on the course.
Subaru decided to have a go at that record, and sent a WRX STI sedan and driver Mark Higgins to the Isle of Man. The car is a stock STI, with the exception of a roll-cage, race harness, fire extinguisher and adjusted springs and dampers to handle the various bumps found on the public roadway. How'd Higgins do? He smashed Pond's record by two minutes, with a time of 19:56.7 and an average speed of 113 miles per hour. Higgins stated, "Setting the record was both the most exhilarating and the most frightening thing I have ever done." Just two days before the 2011 New York Auto Show opens to the press, Audi has launched an eye-popping marketing campaign for its sleek, sophisticated 2012 A7. Today, the five-door coupe will roll straight into Times Square -- not literally, since cars are forbidden in the pedestrian center of town, but onto a high-tech billboard.
The 15,000-square-foot LED billboard sitting at the intersection of 46th and Broadway is part ad campaign, part love letter to New York. Emblazoned with the slogan, "A boldly designed car deserves a boldly designed world", the billboard features a rotating slideshow of seven "places, objects and destinations within New York City that embody bold design". (Sites likely for inclusion: the High Line, Central Park, the Lipstick Building. Less likely: the crowded aisles of Zabar's.) Audi estimates that more than 1,200,000 pedestrians will see the sign each day of its run, from April 18 through May 1.
This being 2012, the billboard campaign will also include heavy integration with Audi's web and social media channels, including YouTube (YouTube.com/audiusa), Facebook (Facebook.com/audiusa), and a new site, A7BoldDesign.com (which appears to be a Facebook app). Audi invites users to check-in at the billboard using Foursquare or Facebook and to tweet their own examples of "bold design" in the Big Apple using the hashtag #BoldDesign. A regularly updated list of those check-ins and tweets will be posted to the billboard.
Even better: Audi will include expanded information about the seven New York destinations featured on the billboard, as well as those added to A7BoldDesign.com. Using QR codes or a mobile browser, passersby can learn more about those locales and find others in the immediate area. Toyota has announced that it will voluntarily repair a number of issues that have arisen with 2001-2003 RAV4 crossovers as well as certain 2009-2010 Matrix and Corolla vehicles. According to Reuters, around 235,500 RAV4 models will be repaired outside of a recall for a "hard shift" problem. Owners have complained that under certain circumstances, the vehicle's transmission would either abruptly shift or otherwise fail to change gears properly. The culprit is typically a faulty engine control module, though in some cases, damage to the transmission may lead to outright replacement. Owners who have previously had to pay for this work out of pocket can apply for reimbursement.

Meanwhile, around 500,000 Matrix and Corolla models will be serviced for "steering drift." The company hasn't exactly elaborated on what that means, but as we first reported yesterday,Toyota hasn't issued a recall because the automaker says that the issue doesn't pose a danger to the vehicle's occupants – this, despite reports of 18 crashes and 11 injuries. Instead, the Japanese manufacturer has labeled the steering problem a customer satisfaction issue. Like the RAV4, owners can have a fix performed free of charge.

NEW YORK–General Motors Corp.'s Buick division hopes to build on its design-led resurgence – epitomized by the elegant Buick Enclave crossover – with a new concept vehicle and new ads starring golfer Tiger Woods.

Ed Welburn, GM's vice-president of global design, said Tuesday that the new concept, the Invicta, will debut next month at the Beijing Auto Show. Welburn only showed a broad outline of the vehicle's design, but said it builds on the sweeping styling and classic waterfall grille of the Buick Riviera concept coupe, which was unveiled last year at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Welburn said the Invicta will show even more clearly than the Riviera the design direction of new Buick vehicles. He also hinted that the Invicta could signal the entry of a coupe in Buick's lineup, although he said the aerodynamic design would work equally well for a sedan.

The Invicta, like the Riviera, was developed jointly by GM design teams in North America and Shanghai. Buick is GM's most popular brand in China, with domestic sales of 332,115 vehicles in 2007, up nine per cent from the year before. The brand is especially popular with Chinese executives, which is one reason for upgrades that have been made in Buick's interiors.

Buick also showed a new television ad that will debut nationwide this week starring Woods, a longtime Buick pitchman. In the ad, Woods is shown hitting paint-filled golf balls onto a canvas, creating a Jackson Pollock-like work of art.

Buick plans to auction off three of the canvases Woods created starting in June at the Buick Open golf tournament. The money will go to charity. Topper Limousine.

WASHINGTON - Automakers gained $25 billion in taxpayer-subsidized loans and oil companies won elimination of a long-standing ban on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as the Senate passed a sprawling spending bill Saturday. ADVERTISEMENT

The 78-12 vote sent the $634 billion measure to President Bush, who was expected to sign it even though it spends more money and contains more pet projects than he would have liked.

The measure is needed to keep the government operating beyond the current budget year, which ends Tuesday. As a result, the legislation is one of the few bills this election year that simply must pass. Bush's signature would mean Congress could avoid a lame-duck session after the Nov. 4 election.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said the bill "stands as a reminder of the failure of the Democratic Congress to fund the government in regular order." But, he said, it "puts the United States one step closer to ending our dependence on foreign sources of energy" by lifting the offshore drilling ban and opening up huge reserves of oil shale in the West.

The Pentagon is in line for a record budget. In addition to $70 billion approved this summer for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Defense Department would receive $488 billion, a 6 percent increase. The spending bill also offers aid to victims of flooding in the Midwest and recent hurricanes across the Gulf Coast.

Such a huge bill usually would dominate the end-of-session agenda on Capitol Hill. But it went below the radar screen because attention focused on the congressional bailout of Wall Street.

The measure settles dozens of battles that have brewed for months between the Democrats who run Congress and the White House and its GOP allies.

The administration won approval of the defense budget. Democrats wrested concessions from the White House on $23 billion for disaster-ravaged states, a doubling of low-income heating subsidies, and smaller spending items such as $24 million more for food shipments to the elderly.

The loan package for automakers would reward them with $25 billion in below-market loans, costing taxpayers $7.5 billion to subsidize the retooling of plants and development of technologies to help U.S. carmakers to build cleaner, more fuel efficient cars. Companies would not have to begin repaying the loans for five years, drawing objections from Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., who predicted they would return for more help when the money is due.

Republicans made ending the coastal drilling ban a central campaign issue this summer as $4-plus per gallon gasoline stoked voter anger and turned public opinion in favor of more exploration.

The action does not mean drilling is imminent and still leaves the oil-rich eastern Gulf of Mexico off limits. But it could set the stage for the government to offer leases in some Atlantic federal waters as early as 2011.

Also in the bill is money to avert a shortfall in Pell college aid grants and solve problems in the Women, Infants and Children program delivering healthy foods to the poor.

In addition to the Pentagon's budget, there is $40 billion for the Homeland Security Department and $73 billion for veterans' programs and military base construction projects. Combined with the Defense Department's spending, that amounts to about 60 percent of the budget work Congress must pass each year.

Democrats came under criticism from the GOP for short-circuiting the normal process for a spending bill after it became clear that Republicans would force difficult votes on the drilling ban.

Democrats also wanted to avoid an election-year clash with Bush that would have played in his favor. They are willing to take their chances that Democrat Barack Obama will be elected president in November and permit increases for scores of programs squeezed by Bush each year.

Bush had threatened to veto bills that did not cut the number and cost of pet projects in half or cause agency operating budgets to exceed his request. Democrats ignored the edict as they drafted the plan and the White House has apparently backed down.
